Koh Pha-Ngan

Nice place, stay at Haad Rin Nok (sunrise side) if it's not full moon party time. Had a quick look at the places round Haad Rin Nai (sunset side), they looked nice but the beach was naff. Chalok Lum on the north coast was really nice but very quiet and out of the way.

The roads.

Lonely Planet says it has a "lack of paved roads", this is an understatement! Imagine the badly concreted parts of the M25 when they have worn out, then imagine something worse and you have the islands main roads. Everything else is dirt track, very badly eroded dirt track. There is a farmers track down Bury Hill (where we used to live) that we used to ride down on our mountain bikes, it's narrow, steep and when you get to the bottom there are huge gullies where the farmer has driven his trackor up in the wet, the roads here are like that only there's more than two gullies and they're deeper!

Accommodation. We stayed in Pha-Ngan Bay Resort which was the nicest looking one on the beach. Prices were from 400b-600b depending on how big the bungalow was and what it had in it. Ours was the cheapest, a small hut with a double bed and a fan, the bathroom was very basic, no flush toilets or hot showers here, not that you needed a hot shower, the water coming out the pipe was warm enough.
