Singapore

It's very nice, some people say it's sterile but if that's just because they have become accustomed to litter and rubbish in their own countries, which is sad really. Accommodation is more expensive than any where else we've been to but the standards seem to be much higher. If you want to spend a fortune on living here you can, there are pubs and restaurants galore in some parts and the prices are good compared to England but not what we've become used to paying. We ended up eating in the food halls in some of the malls, they are really good, it's all hawker food but in a cleaned up environment, there's a big choice in most of them and it's cheap. I was a bit disappointed with the shopping, I've come to the conclusion that if you want consumer electronics then you're going to get a bargain but some of the other things were no cheaper than at home, the one thing I really wanted to buy here they didn't have and said wasn't available in Singapore.

Accommodation - I checked out the www.visitsingapore.com web site before we got here, they have an excellent hotel section that you lets you see hotels in price brackets. We chose the Alana Hotel because it was the in the cheapest section (below S$39) and included a picture. Also because it mentioned golf a lot in the blurb and I was missing it at the time. It was OK, nice and clean and friendly, we ended up paying for a S$45 room as the one I'd booked was a bit small. It's in Gelang which is just outside the city, still only four stops on the MRT though. There's lots of hotels of varying sizes in that area all for the same price, I think I would pick one a couple of streets nearer the station if we went again. The street was a bit busy at night due to all the young ladies selling themselves outside the hotel next door, it was funny to watch though.
