Araquipa

Second city of Peru and so much nicer. It has been rebuilt and cleaned up since the earthquake on 2001 so they haven't had time to get it all grubby again yet. Plaza de Armas is good with the cathedral and all the shops hidden away under the arches. The Santa Catalina convent is really worth going to, you need at least ½ a day though as it takes up a whole city block and has 5km of street within it, we didn't see any nuns though. Also worth going to is the Museo Santuarios Andinos, the home of Jaunita the ice princess, and the other frozen mummies of Inca children sacrificed in the mountains.

Accommodation - Casa de mi Abuela for a bit of luxury, US$30/night for a large room with bathroom and small TV. The gardens are nice as is the pool. It has a restaurant which is good and cheaper than some of those in the surrounding area.
