Santiago

Capital of Chile, it's not bad. Get a VIP mini bus if you arrive at the airport, they're cheaper than taxis. The city centre is a huge shopping complex, every block is a building with a mall inside and offices above, they're good to wonder through, there's some good places to eat in a few of them. We couldn't find the tourist office, I think it's moved since the LP was written, so we did a tour of our own, we saw the markets, plaza's, palace's and cathedral. Cerro Santa Lucia is worth climbing. To get anywhere else, Tur-Bus or Pulman seem to have the best luxury buses. At the end of the road from Hostel Providencia is a really nice Restaurant, San Benito, it's the first one you come to after turning left at the end of the road. There's another nice place on Ave Brasil called Viejo Barrio, they even speak a bit of English.

Accommodation - Both recommended by the info desk at the airport. Hostel Providencia in Providencia run by Mercedes who is very nice. It's a guest house about 15 mins walk from the city centre, it's OK, it's being done up a bit at a time, the shared showers are a bit small but overall it's alright. The other was Hostel Americano which was more like a hotel only with shared bathroom. We only stayed one night as it was nearer the bus station. Both were US$20/night for the pair of us, that price included breakfast which was just tea/coffee and some breadrolls.
