Easter Island

Wow, it was worth any amount of money to come. It's only a small island so can so you can see most things in a few days. We walked around the only town, the capital, Hanga Roa for a day getting to see the moai at Ahu Tahai that are near as well as the harbour and market. We also walked up the Rano Kau volcano to see the crater and the ceremonial village of Orongo from where the "birdman cult" held it's yearly competition. The national parks people charge you to get in, it's cheaper to pay in Pesos than dollars, and they lend you a self guided tour sheet to walk around the ruins. For the rest of the island we did a tour with Patricio who is the brother-in-law of the lady who runs our guest house. His English is good and he is very knowledgeable, he's also cheaper than the tour companies in town. We saw all the main sites except the Cave of White Virgins at the far east of the island as you need a 4x4 to get to it.

The best to restaurants we ate at were:- Avcrei Pua opposite the harbour which is run by an ex-Army/secret police woman who speaks English and German and who is good to talk to but you wouldn't want to meet her in a dark alley. Also Pea which is next to the harbour and sticks out into the sea. It looks like it's recently been done up and the food was really nice. You can sit and watch the kids surfing while you have a meal.

Accommodation - Residencial Tahai on the northern side of town. Less than 10 min walk to the centre of Hanga Roa, 5 mins to Ahu Tahai, a couple of minutes further to the harbour and the restaurants. Run by Maria and her daughter Terresa, who was in the booth at the airport. Cost us US$20/night with private bathroom and breakfast.
